"Whoese music do you like?" everyone keeps asking me this question. Why don't this people understand that music of any kind is still music. It's how you appreciate it. Music is a gift from GOD and so i believe to hate one genre or one music producer is to hate the work of GOD altogether. This afternoon i was speaking to a friend from a well known band in the South Asian music scene, and the friend simply assumed that i liked another group because i was at that point listening to an album by the othr group. You see though i know he was from another group i was totally unaware of the "enemity" that existed and i innocently answered " I like them as much as I like someone else's music". That particular friend did not voice out his unhappiness, but he sure knew how to get it across very well. Wondering why i am telling you all this? Well this whole episode got me thinking about an issue we all face at one point or another in our life, sometimes even every waking moment.
Do we refrain from speaking the truth, i.e. the way we feel, only because we fear that we are going to be hurting someone? I know i am guilty of this, i have lied only to protect the feelings of friends and loved ones, but only i know the burden i have to carry for not speaking the truth. My uncle told me this a few months ago when i was going through some internal turmoil, "be true to yourself, and life will sort itself out" At that point i decided it was time to tell a very special friend the TRUTH that i had been hiding from her for so long by feeding her lies. The reason why i decided to do that was because she has somehow realised that what she has been hearing was not the whole truth, and she had gone all out to hurt herself, and i could not sit behind and watch her do that, it was my fault, and she should not punish herself for my mistakes. I told her the whole TRUTH, and i even gave an explanation for all my lies, the next thing i knew the phone was cut off, and its been 3 months now since i last heard from her. Though i have "lost" a friend i feel better, my soul is not burdened, i feel free.
What is the point of all this you wonder? Well how many of us have hidden truths from people either to save ourselves or to protect someone else? I am sure we are all guilty of this, at one point in time or another. And if you are sitting there and shaking your head, you are lying to yourself. Lying brings us nothing but sorrow and pain, it might give us a good feeling for a bit, but the burden remains with us for a long time to come. After that incident i have decided to be true to myself, and true to the people around me. Being true however does not equate to you being blunt, dont use the idea of truth to be blunt. be true but at the same time be politicaly correct. I am still trying to be politically correct and not blunt, but somehow at some point i tend to mix the two up. Well it's a new step that i have taken and it is going to take some time, but when i am 60 maybe i would have mastered it. :)
